An interesting article, recently published, analyzed the suitability of drugs in patients receiving pharmacological treatment for autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), based on the premise that 30 to 50% of these patients do not respond adequately or suffer from serious side effects and lasting.
42 ASD patients who were resistant to pharmacological treatment underwent the pharmacogenetic test and the results were encouraging: A total of 39 participants (93%) improved after the pharmacogenetic intervention. 23 participants (55%) achieved symptom stability, reducing the frequency of medical appointments and hospital admissions.
Clinical improvement was greater than that observed in a control group (N = 62) composed of patients who did not take the test. The conclusion was that the implementation of pharmacogenetic interventions has the potential to significantly improve clinical outcomes in populations with severe comorbid ASD, hitherto resistant to treatment.
