What is pharmacogenetics
Pharmacogenetics (or pharmacogenomics) is the study of genetic variations that influence an individual’s response to certain drugs. Pharmacogenetics is the combination of pharmacology and genomics. Pharmacology is the part of science that studies how medicines work. Genomics is the study of a person’s genome, including the interactions between genes and with the environment. Each person responds uniquely to a treatment: while a treatment works well in one person, it may not be effective or cause adverse side effects in another. Pharmacogenetics helps doctors to make more informed treatment decisions. This leads to better results by reducing drug-related adverse events and increasing the effectiveness of treatments.
When is pharmacogenetics indicated?
Pharmacogenetic testing is recommended for any patient who is taking multiple medications, who has experienced a therapeutic failure related to a medication, who has suffered from side effects or who is taking a medication that recommends testing (the FDA has a list of medications for which testing is recommended/required in the USA).
The test is also recommended for polymedicated patients.
How many times should patients be tested?
Patients only need to be tested once, as the genetic information does not change over time. In this way, genetic tests are useful for life.
However, it should be noted that, as new gene-drug interactions are studied, previously untested genes may be included in the test. If this new interaction needs to be assessed, a new test should be carried out.
How do I request a ConectGene test?
ConectGene’s genetic tests are easy and convenient. Simply go to our online store and make your purchase. The saliva collection kits are sent to the patient’s home. He then deposits the kit at the post office at no extra cost and we carry out the test.
How is the sample taken?
DNA analysis can be done with practically any cell in your body. At ConectGene, we use your saliva as a sample. This method is just as safe and efficient as blood sampling, but is more convenient for the patient.
As soon as payment is made, the patient receives a collection kit with detailed instructions. The patient then delivers the kit to the post office and we carry out the test (the shipping is paid for by us).
How long does it take to get the test results?
Our reports are sent to patients by e-mail usually between 20 and 30 days after the samples are received.
Are ConectGene tests covered by health insurance?
At the moment, the tests are not covered by health insurance.
